They are adorable little owls. I'll post a picture of their other color phase, a gray form Eastern Screech Owl.

Thanks for all the nice comments. I was using a nice telephoto lens and didn't get close enough to disturb the owl. It never opened its eyes and just kept basking in the sun on a cold day. I know that if they sense you're too close, the owl will go down inside the hole.

I have feeders out too and get a fair variety of birds. Nothing too special other than the pair of Red-shouldered Hawks that come for a chicken leg every day.

I need to find a spot like that! I have a regular feeder, two suet feeders, and two hummingbird feeders. All I have gotten is house sparrows, and the occasional grackle and dove. So I'm not counting on getting anything of interest in my yard lol. Lucky you though! If I ever make it to Mass., I will definitely let you know :)

I've been seeing Screech Owls in this particular hole for the last 8 years. And I know of other people that set up boxes in their back yards and get Screech Owls nesting.

I've been checking ebird reports, but no one in the panhandle of Texas really reports birds they find. I have some friends that are really into birds, but the only owl spots they know of are all for GHO. I love those too, but I've been seeing quite a few lately and screech have been on my list for awhile. Thanks for the link, I will check it out!

Ashley, they are cute little birds and I'm sure one of these days you'll see one. Have you ever checked out one of the local bird clubs or the sightings reports for Texas like this one? http://birding.aba.org/maillist/TX
