orange breasted falcon

Falco deiroleucus

Description:

A neo tropical falcon that appears to fill the niche of the Peregrine falcon in Mexico, central and south Americas. Because of its wide range, it is considered a "species of least concern" even though in many parts of its range it is critically theatened, and programs are working to reintroduce the birds into their native breeding range. This pair breeds ontop of the Mayan temple #4 at Tikal, where there are protective bars around its nest to prevent predation by stronger species

Habitat:

Tikal National preserve

Notes:

We saw onw pair on the wing in Belize but couldn't get a picture. These were taken by my husband as mine had the focus wrong
