Dryocopus pileatus
The Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus) is a very large North American woodpecker, roughly crow-sized, inhabiting deciduous forests in eastern North America, the Great Lakes, the boreal forests of Canada, and parts of the Pacific coast. It is also the largest woodpecker in the United States, except the possibly extinct Ivory-billed Woodpecker.

This is one of my favorite birds as a kid. We had one in our area. But I haven't seen one since and my friends nearby have a male and female coming into their yard occasionally. They are so lucky and you are too. Wonderful!
These are my favorite North Amercan woodpeckers. I can't remember ever seeing one while growing up on the east coast. However, I saw many in Florida. Unlike most other woodpeckers they always amazed me because they were virtually unafraid of humans and would have no problem getting close to the forest floor.
Thanks Tom & Maria!
I agree with Tom, nice spotting and series!
Nice one Fyn! It seems to be a good day for Pileated's.
