Sympetrum semicinctum

Description:

About 40mm long. Eyes are brown above, green below. Face is yellow with a black vertex. Thorax is yellow with several diagonal black lines on each side. Abdomen is yellow above, black below. From the base, just over half the wings are darkened, amber at the base, to dark brown near the center.

Habitat:

Urban garden.

Notes:

S. semicinctum occidentalis - Western subpecies The abdomen of this specimen is entirely yellow, though in this species it is often partially or entirely red. I took this photo a few years ago when the dragonfly perched on a stake I had supporting some vegetables. I no longer grow vegetables but leave the stakes up for the dragonflies.
