The curlew breeds in the great plains and great basin states, wintering in marshes, tidal flats and beaches of the california, texas, mexico and florida. It is easily identified by it's size and by the length of its beak relative to it's body

Mudflats of the San Diego river, between Mission and Ocean Beaches
