Description:

Very large moth, 5 cm long with a 7 cm wingspan. Striking colors and an iridescent purple overlay on many of the scales, depending on the angle of light. The eyes reflect red in the light, but are not actually red (second picture). Family Erebidae.

Habitat:

Street lights, semi-rural residential area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.
