American Bullfrog

Rana catesbeiana

Description:

Olive green color, huge eyes!! I only could see the top of the frog but the naturalis who was our guide identified the bullfrog for the group. The call was very loud and we were told that breeding season is starting and this was a male defending his territory.

Habitat:

This frog was partially submerged in dead reeds just a couple of feet from the edge of a pond. The pond was in a swampy area with lots of cattails, cordgrasses and shrubs.

Notes:

Aransas Wildlife refuge is an incredible area and a wonderful place to take your children, or in our case, grandchildren. Several guided wals and talks are offered throughout the day.

Hello. Regretfully, this spotting does not demonstrate parental care of young invertebrates.
