Synagris sp
short waisted wasp around 20mm long, some red/orange colouration about the head and thorax, the wings were transparent brown with black tips. The abdomen was plain black with a grey bloom
sub-tropical arid tree/bush savanna with hot, wet summers and dry, mild winter
the all black tail should be diagnostic, I imagine, as many of these type of wasp have bright red, orange or yellow bands or terminal portions to their abdomens

Hi Marco, if you've time to spare and want to see a few more wasps try http://www.ispot.org.za/search/node/Hyme... ,a bit restricted geographically compared with PN but it has its virtues.
I suggest you to read this paper for the identification
http://digitallibrary.amnh.org/dspace/ha...
and this for the actual nomenclature

Do you have a reference? (not in my insect book)
This isn't a Synagris, it's a Rhynchium marginellum sabulosum.
