A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Picoides borealis
They have a black and white back and a white belly. There is a black stripe running along the top of the head, and they have a large white cheek patch.
Found in the southeastern US, they inhabit old growth pine forests.
They are an endangered species, mostly because the old growth pine forests they inhabit have been cut down. There are estimated to be only 12,000 wild birds left.
