Cupboard spider

Steatoda grossa

Description:

Male. Reddish body, brown legs, enlarged pedipalps, and a striped grey pattern on the abdomen. Spotted in my shower this morning. He was quite shy and kept trying to get away - when I moved him to a window sill in the kitchen to get better light, he went and hid in my radiator. Haven't seen him since, but he's probably still in the kitchen.

Habitat:

Urban dwelling

Notes:

Assuming that the ID is correct, this one of the few "medically significant" spiders in Germany, but the bite, while unpleasant, is not deadly. This individual's behaviour was timid - it ran and hid when disturbed and showed no sign of aggression - and I have been told that this is typical of the species.
