New Zealand Weka (sth isl)

Gallirallus australis

Description:

Weka are native rails of New Zealand. Flightless, quite large (30cm) and attitude in abundance. They are always this rusty brown with black fleck. Strong red legs and strong beak, there is a light grey stripe on the face. There is a north island variety which features more grey on their bodies and face.

Habitat:

New zealand native forest, forest edges, clearings, rural and semi urban areas with greenery.

Notes:

These are real characters of New Zealand native birds. Many people see them as pests, but they are very adaptable and very clever birds. This pair are raising their chicks in our garden, feeding is a family affair, they walk together, sit together, preen each other. lovely birds.
