Coltsfoot Cineraria; Tusílago Canario

Pericallis tussilaginis

Description:

Herbaceous perennial native to slightly moist places in the lower succulent shrub in the Anaga region of eastern Tenerife, Canary Islands. Has broadly heart shaped, light green, serrated leaves with silver hairs on the lower side and a lax inflorescence with bright rose flowers with a yellow center. The Pericallis genus is native to the Macaronesian archipelagos (Canaries, Azores, Madeira) and this species having leaves like those of Tussilago farfara (Coltsfoot) is named after it. The Coltsfoot genus name Tussilago is a reminder that it used to be used as a cough medicine but I doubt Pericallis species are used the same way.

Habitat:

Spotted at peninsula de Anaga, Tenerife, Canary Islands. Wet forest. Parque Rural de Anaga.

Notes:

Camera Model: NIKON D300. Exposure Time: 1/500 sec., f/11, ISO Speed Rating: 800. Exposure Bias: 0 EV. Focal Length: 300.0 mm. No flash fired.
