baby alligators

Alligator mississippiensis

Description:

I have never seen baby alligators in the wild. This was a nice spotting for me. These baby Alligators seem to be about a year old. They grow a foot a year for the first 5 years. They are between 15 and 20 inches long when they hatch. They usually remain with their mother for the first 2 years. So, the mother must have been in the area somewhere. Hard to tell in this picture but I counted 5 little alligators in this nest.

Habitat:

These little alligators were spotted in the marsh at Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Anahuac, Texas
