Western Cottonmouth

Agkistrodon piscovorus

Description:

Beautiful adult W. Cottonmouth found with three other adults in the same small area.

Habitat:

Found along a small natural dam of branches and leaves. All four Cottonmouths were hidden under it, with presumably more that I didn't see. The dam was in between a large swampy area that leads to the Cumberland River.

Notes:

Only the first Cottonmouth got defensive, but only after I spooked it. All others were calm, reclusive, and shy. This trail has a very healthy population of snakes.
