Buff-bellied hummingbird

Amazilia yucatanensis

Description:

This was only the second time that this species of hummingbird had been documented in North Carolina - it is a Western species. The buff-bellied hummingbird winters in small numbers along the Gulf Coast of the United States from Texas to the Florida panhandle. This year, one ended up on the East Coast in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The residents of the home where the hummer was feeding graciously allowed many birders to visit their yard for a view and photos.

Habitat:

Private home yard and feeders
