Tule Elk

Cervus canadensis nannodes

Description:

These seemed to be thriving in the area. We saw several large groups at different points along the trail. There were several notably large males and also some calves in the groups.

Habitat:

Grasslands at Tomales Point, Point Reyes National Seashore

Notes:

A study at this location in 2007 indicated the presence of the elk had a positive impact on the native grasslands. If you click on the wikipedia link listed here in the references and read "Diet and impact on native grasslands" there is a more detailed account of their impact.
