A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Ara macao
Large red, yellow and blue macaw. 84-92cm (33-36"). Crown, body and forewings red, upper primaries and secondaries blue with yellow upper coverts. The face is white and bare skin with no feathered lines.
Found here near Manu sanctuary on the Madre De Dios river in Eastern Peru. Mixed forest and on localized clay licks along river bank.
Although once widespread, this species is in decline in many areas, especially in Peru. These birds were checking out nesting sites and I have included an image of one of the local clay licks.

Thank you for the comment Mark. It is brilliant to watch these birds in their own environment. Have to say, like most parrots they are incredibly noisy!
Thank you for the nomination Ashley.
Lovely series and great to see these in natural habitat. Thanks.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
