Podilymbus podiceps
Pied-billed grebes are small waterbirds with lobed, not webbed, feet. They are stocky with a short grayish bill that is encircled in black in breeding colors. They are 31–38 cm (12–15 in) long. They are primarily brown with a dark crown and back. The underside of the wings are dark as well. Both sexes are similar in appearance.
They are found widely across North and South America and inhabit freshwater marshes with quantities of emergent vegetation.
I once nearly dunked all my camera gear trying to photograph these fascinating little birds. The float I designed for my gear tried to deflate with me and camera onboard. It didn't take long to get to shore fortunately!
