White-breasted Nuthatch

Sitta carolinensis

Description:

I am wondering if this is some sort of defensive posture. The bird was hopping up and down the tree, but when I got too close, or made too much noise, it assumed this position.

Habitat:

Small Norway Maple forest near Norway Spruces, Deciduous forests, and some swamp land.
