Deer Moss

Cladonia rangiferina

Description:

The color is grayish, whitish or brownish grey. It's a fructicose, and extensively branched, with each branch usually dividing into three or four. I t grows on humus, or on soil over rock.

Habitat:

This specimen was spotted at a County nature Preserve in a portion of pine flat woods that has been over the years taken over by oaks. The canopy has provided heavy shade for the ground, preventing normal FL type grasses to grow anymore. Deer Moss has started to materialize in this particular area.

Notes:

Also known as reindeer lichen.
