Silk Oak

Description:

Possibly of the Proteaceae family. Very elaborate red/orange/yellow flowers arranged in an inflorescence on branches of tree.

Habitat:

I saw this tree while hiking a drier section of the Mau'umae Trail in the Honolulu area. It was mixed in with a bunch of ironwoods.

Not surprising that they are invasive in Hawaii. They grow very easily from seed in sub-tropical parts of Aus.

Native to Australia. It has a beautiful grain and was widely used as a furniture timber in the first half of the 1900's.
