Four-spotted Skimmer

Libellula quadrimaculata

Description:

This dragonfly is common throughout the northern hemisphere. In North America it is called the Four-spotted Skimmer. In other areas, it may be called the Four-spotted Chaser. This dragonfly is predominately reddish brown with a black tip on the abdomen.

Habitat:

Ponds and wetlands as nymphs, but I often find them in upland areas as non-breeding adults.

Notes:

I photographed this lovely dragonfly in the park just down the hill from our house. In 2006, when this photo was taken, we had literally thousands of them in the park, but they have been rare sightings there since.
