Description:

These are stocky wading birds with a grayish-blue body and back. The wings have a black scaled pattern. The head is black with white cheeks and a pale yellow crown.

Habitat:

Spotted at the Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge in San Diego, California.

Notes:

A locale birder told me a family of these moved into the refuge a few years ago and now there are several of them at this refuge.
