Northern Flicker

Colaptes auratus

Description:

I usually only see the white spot on the rump of this large woodpecker or hear its loud "keew" call as it flies off or see the rings of holes it pecked in my magnolia and maple trees so I was so happy to see it so close up digging around in the sleet covered ground. Such beautiful striking plumage!

Habitat:

urban backyard
