Male Army Ant or Legionary Ant

Neivamyrmex sp.

Description:

A chunky brown male ant with an oversized heavy abdomen. It is slow and awkward and is commonly called a "Sausage Fly". It is nocturnal, and part of the nuptial flight of this species. While worker females have very tiny eyes, these males have very large eyes and enormous mandibles. (Family Formicidae, Subfamily Ecitoninae.)

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, semi-urban area on the outskirts of San Cristobal de Las Casas, Chiapas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

This genus contains mainly subterranean ants that are not commonly seen and are widely spread in temperate zones. I have only ever encountered males in early spring at lights.
