Spittlebug

Could be a variant of either of the two species (ignipectus or bicinta). In this reference, there is a brief discussion of the problem of color variation:
"Desafortunadamente, la identificación de los salivazos
que atacan la caña de azúcar y los pastizales en
América Central sigue siendo difícil. Muchas especies
muestran patrones de coloración muy similares; por
ejemplo, muchas tienen dos o tres bandas transversas
y otras presentan líneas o hileras de puntos sobre un
fondo oscuro (Figs. 1-4, 6-8). Por otra parte, una misma
especie puede exhibir múltiples patrones de colores;
por ejemplo, algunos individuos de Prosapia simulans
tienen bandas notables mientras otros son oscuros o
sin bandas (Fig. 6a,b) (Clark et al. 1976). Por lo tanto,
salivazos aparentemente diferentes podrían pertenecer
a una misma especie polimórfica, mientras que
otros muy similares podrían pertenecer a diferentes
especies e incluso a diferentes géneros. Esta confusión
con patrones de color, junto con una uniformidad
morfológica entre géneros relacionados, complican
el análisis taxonómico y, por esta razón, los trabajos
taxonómicos utilizan principalmente la morfología de
la genitalia del macho."

Thank you Thomas, yes, very interesting. I couldn't find any like it either. A variant perhaps or a result of interbreeding? There is a red spot visible on one of the front legs. It flew before I could get more pictures. I´ll look for more next time I'm out there.

This is interesting, because I only know of two Prosapia species from North America, Prosapia bicinta (two-lines spittlebug) and Prosapia ignipectus (red-legged spittlebug), and it doesn't look like either of them.

Spittle bug, yes. Also a froghopper (Cercopidae). I'd say Prosapia sp.
