Spectacled Toad

Duttaphrynus melanostictus

Description:

Grows to about 20 cm (8 in) long, widely distributed in South and Southeast Asia.

Habitat:

tropical rainforest

Notes:

There were about 6 of these toads and one frog hanging out in an abandoned swimming pool in Tangkoko Batuangus National Park.

Thanks doyen, they do have quite the cryptic pattern, thankfully they didn't blend in with the swimming pool they were in.

Stunning view! I did not immediately recognize them as toads. Their cryptic pattern is redolent of fungus or mushrooms.

More like poisonous cane toads, I think. :-)

That's not good Scott. Maybe they are eating all the snakes before they have a chance to get big enough to eat them!

I wonder if they've hurt the snake population here. I sure don't see many in my big yard/garden which is overrun with these toads :-(

Thanks Rosa. That sucks Scott, I'm not sure if they were a problem where I spotted them, but they aren't naturally found on Sulawesi either. Seems they have naturalized in many areas in Asia.

Lovely! A genus synonym is Bufo.
