Wood Duck

Aix sponsa

Description:

Mating Pair. Male: Very colorful; brown body with black, deep red, white and some green at the top of the head. Orange and white beak. Bright red eyes. Female: Brown body that went to a brown/grey at the head. White throat and white mask around eyes. Black eyes have orange ring around them.

Habitat:

Wooded watery area. Most of the area at the end of winter through spring has the cranberry brush flood where they build nests and perch in the trees.

Notes:

These two I found waiting on the side of the road and waited for me to stop (which I was going to do for a picture anyway). After patiently waiting for the car to stop and for me to take a picture they then continued their trek to the other side. The ones in this area that live here every spring(ish) time look both ways before crossing the road even though they could just fly over the road.
