Fruit Fly

Tephritidae

Description:

I originally thought that this insect was a plant hopper from the family Derbidae, mainly because of the way in which it is holding its wings. Thanks to an ID Suggestion from bayucca I can now, more correctly, call it an unidentified Tephritidae.

Habitat:

Spotted in our backyard on White Jute (Corchorus capsularis) known as Saluyot in the Philippines. Plant identification - http://www.stuartxchange.org/PasauNaBilo...

Thank you, bayucca, for the ID Suggestion and your comments. They are very much appreciated and, as you can see, I have updated my spotting accordingly. I have particularly taken note of your advice concerning the use of the family name and I have now called this spotting "Unidentified Tephritidae". I hope that is acceptable because I have been using that way to describe organisms when I don't know the subfamily, genus or species. I don't know if you have noticed, but in the Biodiversity of Singapore website, they often use expressions like "Tephritidae sp." I have always thought that sp., spp. and ssp. should only be attached to a genus name. I would like to hear your opinion on this, if you could spare a moment.
Thank you again, John B.

Usually we do not add the family name in the scientific field (only sometimes subfamily/tribe, but mostly name of genus or best species name. But in this case, we probably would not get closer than the family.

This is not a Derbidae, but a Diptera, so a "fly" from the family Tephritidae.
