Alderfly

Sialidae

Description:

black flying bug

Habitat:

near water

Notes:

Alderflies flutter like butterflies. They are commonly found sitting on plants. They lay their eggs on plants and rocks. When they hatch, the larvae make their way into the water. The larvae live underwater and eat aquatic arthropods. They eventually climb out of the water and onto land. They dig holes to pupate in. When the adult alderfly emerges, it comes out and flies away.
