Shepherd's Purse

Capsella bursa-pastoris

Description:

Small wildflower introduced from Europe. Low growing cluster of leaves, fairly long, toothed, dandelion-like. Cluster of tiny white flowers with four petals each at the top of the stem. Triangular shaped seed pods.

Habitat:

Sunken Meadow State Park, New York. Grows in disturbed areas, cultivated land, lawns and similar habitats.

Notes:

The common name for this plant most likely comes from the shape of the seed pod, which resembles a medieval shepherd's purse. Young leaves can be used as greens. This plant is used medicinally as well.
