Hey, this is a crawfish mound. I have them all over my yard, and according to this map I'm right up the road from you in Slidell. You can watch them come out at night, they are easy to handle so long as you watch out for their large claws.
I presume this was near water? If so, it is probably a crayfish burrow. See http://www.gcsu.edu/crayfishes/ecologyan... for more information. Of course, it may not be possible to ID the particular species that made this burrow, but I suspect that it was done by a crayfish. What do you think?
