Mistletoe cactus

Tristerix aphyllus

Description:

Lovely red flowers on this cactus parasite. It parasitized only 2 species of cacti in Chile. Here is it on the hedgehog cactus (Echinopsis chiloensis).

Habitat:

dry forest

Notes:

I spotted this parasite for the first time from a bus, speeding along the highway towards Santiago. Even though I was far from the cacti, I had a feeling these red blooms I was seeing were not from the cacti itself. As I got close up on foot in La Campana national park, I could see they were a parasite.
