Green iguana

Iguana iguana

Description:

This green iguana is in the midst of changing color from its winter gray-brown to its brighter summer green color. Its mouth is a bright red inside in contrast to its outside color. It opened its neck skin flap (or dewlap) in some of the photos either to scare me off or try to court me.

Habitat:

Along an inland fresh water canal in western Boca Raton, FL.

Notes:

These iguanas dig holes to lay their eggs in my backyard but do not guard the nests in any way and sometime the birds discover and steal the eggs..

Thanks stacyh! This large iguana was one of the most photogenic of the bunch that visit.

Thanks, Nicole. It was a little hard to get used to seeing them. I still don't love them but they are really prehistoric looking which is interesting. It looks like this year will be a big iguana comeback year. They almost died out here in a hard freeze a few years ago. But this spring I have already seen about 6 different ones of all sizes and ages with the smallest being about 2 feet long.

Can anyone tell if this is a male or female iguana? I have seen three iguanas in my backyard, two about this size and one bigger. I also have seen holes dug in various places of about the size that iguanas make to bury their eggs so at least one must be a female.
