Tadpoles (of a common frog)

Rana temporaria

Description:

The common frogs in my Mums garden pond have been really busy over the weekend filling the pond with masses of frogspawn, slightly later than normal but I thinnk this is due to the late snow and lengthened periods of extreme cold we had up until this weekend. The tadpoles inside seem to be at different stages with some larger black dots than others.

Habitat:

In the pond my Mum has in her back garden.

Notes:

There is only one species of frog in the UK. the only other amphibian we have is the natterjack toad that is endangered.

Hi Lipase, I think that necrophilia in frogs is quite common place but then I suppose if they only get to mate once a year they will not mind haha!! on a serious note though here is an interesting link on the subject:

Hi Debbie, it was the same here over the other side of Kinder Scout. There was a sudden explosion of frog spawn last week after the thick snow had melted. There were a couple of frogs that had died probably due to the cold and the fact they all have to fit into half the volume of water as last year D: I don't want to creep anyone out too much but I found one frog 'mating' with a dead one is this normal?! A bit disturbing/sad
