A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Branta sandvicensis
Also called the Nene bird, this Hawaiian endemic has deeply furrowed golden neck plumage and is largely terrestrial, spending little time on the water. After a close call with extinction, it remains as Hawaii's state bird. It is one of the most isolated, sedentary, and threatened of all water birds. (Information from Audubon)
Grassy shrubland, lowland pastures, sparsely vegetated lava flows
The Nene birds were spotted near the entrance to the Kilauea Lighthouse in Kauai, Hawaii
