Neochmia temporalis
A small olive-grey finch bird about 110 mm long with a red bill, strikingly scarlet brow and rump. On the shoulders is a golden-olive mark and the tail is black.
Usually spotted in undergrowth and margins of forests, woodlands, coastal scrub and heath. Also seen in cultivated lands. This bird was spotted on tea-trees (Leptospermum) bordering a reserve and water course.
A large flock of these were flying between eucalyptus trees into the leptospermum. Their scarlet heads and rump stood out as they flew. very restless birds, much like the little wrens. Also called Emblema temporalis

very sad !
Gone forever as things stand. I remember thousands of them around the creeks but every second house has a cat since then
That's sad. Gone for the season or forever ? - I hope it's not the latter. We do need to conserve continous tracts of native trees, it seems - that's where I see /hear most of these little ones.
These finches are not seen around our place so I was really excited when this flash of red flew past me at a reserve nearby- to get a photo after, that was a bonus !
One of my favourite birds, almost all the small birds are gone from here
