Eastern Ringed Xenica - female

Geitoneura acantha

Description:

A pale orange butterfly with dark brown patterns on wings. The female of this species ( seen here) has dark patterns on the outer half of the fore wing, the rest is plain. The hind wings are without pattern except for ringed ocelli. The underside of both wings are beautifully patterned.

Habitat:

Shady forest gully Distribution: http://bie.ala.org.au/species/Geitoneura...

Notes:

I found this butterfly very difficult to photograph with wings open during previous sightings. Was lucky this time, she did not have her wings open for long. http://museumvictoria.com.au/bioinformat... The male of the species shows dark patterns on most of the upper sides of fore wings

Thanks so much Laura. They are very difficult to spot with their wings closed.

So beautiful! I think I might have walked right past, those colours blend in well with the dead grass. Really lovely set, Leuba :)
