Buteo nitidus
Lifer :) A small Buteo that is gray all over. The tail is long and banded black and white, and there is faint streaking on the chest.
Seen at the levy at Santa Ana NWR. Thorn scrub habitat.
A volunteer at Santa Ana was showing me a sleeping Pauraque, so I asked him if he knew where I could find a Gray Hawk at. He told me exactly where to go near the entrance of the NWR. When we got back to the visitors center, I told the rest of my group I was going to walk down the levy a ways and see if I could find the hawk, and none of them wanted to go too because they were hot and tired of walking, so they just waited at the visitors center. They also figured since it was middle of the day I wouldn't see it. Let's just say some of them weren't too happy when I came back with about 60 pictures of him ;)

So cool Ashley!
Thanks Dan, Antonio, Tom, and Felix! And nope, he had flown away out of site and I didn't know where he had gone so no one else got to see him ;)
