Hyalophora euryalus
Large (over 100 mm wingspan), brown to red moth with white discal spot or "Nike swoosh" on hindwing and purple eyespot on forewing. The antennae are large and bushy. "EURYALUS: from the Greek "eurys" (broad) + the Latin "ala" (wing)" The common name is after one of the primary food sources, the wild lilac Ceanothus sp.
High School campus near chaparral and scrub oak. The range is from "British Columbia to western Montana, south through west coast states to Baja California. In California, found mostly west of the Sierras."
This moth was collected from campus by a HS student and turned in to the Biology teacher. The images were taken by one of my teen nature enthusiasts with an iPhone :)
