Canadian or North American Porcupine

Erethizon dorsatum

Description:

The pictures are not of the porcupine but of one I spotted and documented last fall that stayed in the area and you can see the damage on one brach of a Jack Pine that he did over the winter. All of the major branches on this tree had at least this much damage or more from the bottom branches to the very top of the tree. Unfortunately the tree will die, but this shows the damage that porcupines to do pine. You can see the other oval pellet like scat of the porcupine which was in voluminous amounts under the entire tree.

Habitat:

Mixed pine and deciduous transition forest
