Namitha, I hope you get to visit the hills again. I come from India and my father's family came from Kodaikanal hills - lots of Tasmanian Blue gum and wattle - taken from Australia in the 1880s I think. Must say, these berries are not as sweet or "perfect" as store bought ones because they grow naturally and wild. Some when ripe turn yellow and often have tiny maggots...something to watch out for. still it was good fun eating berries in the wild !
Thanks everyone. Thank you Leuba, I had no idea it was edible. My mom and brother tried it but I was afraid. I actually told them not to eat it. If only I had this info at hand at that time. That's really sad. But next time when we see it , we will make sure we try it. Not sure , when next time will be, cause we don't have any such berries down in the plains. And also it's interesting to know that you spent your childhood in India.
They are nice to eat - especially the "ash raspberries" with deep maroon berries. The leaves are covered with fine hairs making them look ash-grey. We ate tons up in Kodaikanal hills as children. Nice series of pics Namitha.
