Yes, it is widespread in the northern hemisphere, and it is considered a major pest species in USA :/

Well at least is a nice pest ;) but 300 different species, that must be a really well adapted species!

Wiki says that its larvae consumes the leaves of over 300 species of trees, shrubs and plant, so it became a pest , in some areas...
