California Least Tern

Sterna antillarum browni

Description:

Smallest of the American terns. Orange bill with black tip. Breeding plumage is black crown that falls below the eye to the back of neck with a V shaped patch of white of forhead. Back and wings are light grey with dark leading edge on wings. White underside.

Habitat:

Shoreline, estuaries, rivers and lakes

Notes:

Few breeding sites in the SF Bay Area.
