Eastern Fox Squirrel

Sciurus niger

Description:

Fox squirrels are about 19 to 29 inches in length including the tail. In south Texas they are a grizzled gray above and a orange/russet below and on the neck, cheeks and around the eyes. Coloration can vary somewhat across their range.

Habitat:

I photographed this squirrel in a scrub/thorn forest along the Rio Grande River, but they are often found in open woodlands across much of eastern North America.
