A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Agelaius phoeniceus
The red-winged blackbird is a common bird over much of North America. The male is a small black bird with red and yellow epaulets on the shoulders. The female is a dark brown with patterning on the breast, buff around the face, and a darker cap and line through the eye.
Widely spread over a variety of habitats throughout its range. I photographed this individual in a thorn forest, but I've also photographed them in deciduous forests, wetlands, grasslands, and urban settings.
