Least Sandpiper

Calidris minutilla

Description:

The smallest shorebird I have ever seen. Its body was about the size of a House Sparrow.

Habitat:

Deciduous hardwood forest. Along a muddy stream

Notes:

This is probably my favorite of all my bird spottings. It was such a tiny bird it was a wonder I even saw it, let alone thought it was anything other than a Sparrow that would fly away before I was able to get it into focus. I took several photos after which another hiker took a few more. This bird took no notice of us as we stood a mere 20 feet away. Spotted along Stream trail.
