Eastern Garter Snakes

Thamnophis sirtalis

Description:

3 snakes together sunning. Each is 12-14 inches long (31 -36 cm). Non-venomous. Usually non-aggressive. Common. Grows up to 4 feet so these were probably juveniles. Food is insects, small amphibians, earthworms, fish, slugs, tadpoles to name a few. Coloring variable. These snakes were black, yellowish, off white and brown.

Habitat:

Open woodlands by a spring fed brook. (On the property I live)

Notes:

One snake was curious when I approached and very photogenic (Photos #1,2 and 5). One was afraid and went back in whole after some distant photos (Photo #3) and one was aggressive toward me (Photo #4).
