Giant Maxillaria

Ornithidium aureum (Maxillaria gigantea)

Description:

terrestrial, tiny flowers, huge, tall plant, 1m plus

Habitat:

cloudforest, 2200m

Notes:

I spotted this orchid on a rocky viewpoint of a trail in Chicaque natural park. I was surprised to see such small flowers on such a large plant. While I was checking out this orchid, an amazing hummingbird came along to visit the flowers. I was able to get just a few shots before it flew away.

Thanks again Jose. I don't have any pics of the open blooms so its tough to tell if it's your suggestion or not but a plant this big is fairly distinct, so it must be that.
