Monarch Butterfly chrysalis

Danaus plexippus

Description:

The outside of the chrysalis is really clear and what you see is the green "pupa" inside. As the pupa changes from the body parts of a caterpillar into the body parts of a butterfly, you can see a definite color change inside the chrysalis. When it's ready to make its way into the world, the chrysalis color will turn brown, yellow and orange.

Habitat:

Casa Romantica grounds. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens was built by city father Ole Hanson as his family home in 1927. The grounds feature succulent gardens, original tile walkways, a small amphitheater, all kinds of nooks and crannies, and sweeping ocean views.

Notes:

An old, unused trellis had been leaned against a wall a few years ago. Apparently the Monarchs find it a good place to chrysalis, so it has been left there, and every year a number of chrysalis show up there. This was the first of this year.
